BlowUp Art The Hague 2024: Creativity floats on the Hofvijver

This year, BlowUp Art The Hague puts the Hofvijver, the historical heart of the city since the 13th century, in the spotlight. The temporary festival with inflatable artworks, located in the Museum Quarter, transforms the pond into a lush garden on a floating pontoon. Here, enchanting creations by four prominent Dutch designers shine: Marcel Wanders, Job Smeets, Studio Mieke Meijer, and Sigrid Calon.

Four specially designed artworks adorn the floating garden, which also includes water features. This unique landscape was created thanks to the collaboration between students from Yuverta’s ‘Livable City and Climate’ program, ecological landscaper Deborah Treep, and artist Frank Bruggeman. The project uniquely unites art, ecology, and design.

The artists of BlowUp Art The Hague 2024

The third edition of BlowUp Art The Hague is curated by Mary Hessing, who has selected four prominent names in the Dutch design world:

Studio Job: Job Smeets is known for his playful and often provocative designs. At Studio Job, unique pieces are manufactured by combining high-tech tools with traditional techniques that have almost disappeared in the Netherlands, such as bronze casting, stained glass making, and enameling. Everyday objects such as jerrycans and pans undergo a complete transformation here: they are enlarged, deformed, and sometimes even given a golden nose.

Marcel Wanders: A pioneer in Dutch Design, combining elegance and innovation. Wanders’ colorful, mirrored eggs on the Hofvijver not only reflect the visitors, but also form portraits of passers-by in the heart of democracy. They embody opinions that sometimes clash or become unbalanced for a moment, only to float upright again.

Studio Mieke Meijer: Meijer is known for her minimalist and architectural designs. The playful term ‘Arboresque,’ derived from ‘Arboretum’ (a collection of living trees), refers to an installation of three air-inflated trees designed by Studio Mieke Meijer. These tree-like structures vary in size and progress from trunk to branches and twigs. The logical connection between these elements reflects the structure of nature, where similar patterns can be found in everything from plants to galaxies.

Sigrid Calon: Her geometric, graphic style translates perfectly to inflatable art. Sigrid Calon’s inflatable artwork is a tribute to the ‘Prime Minister’s turret’. This octagonal structure, presumably built in the first half of the 14th century, originally served as a summer gazebo for the counts of Holland. Calon’s creation reflects the symbolism of that original function and emphasizes the loving openness that she would like to see reflected in contemporary politics.

About the concept: The nature-inclusive garden

In times of climate crisis, all innovations are aimed at using greenery more cleverly to improve the livability of the city; think of roof gardens, city farms, food forests, and climate control. This floating garden, in which exciting water features and willow bundles alternate, serves as a temporary example to inspire visitors.

A workshop by visual artist Frank Bruggeman gave the initial impetus for the design by second-year students from the ‘livable city and climate’ department of Yuverta. Under the guidance of ecological landscapers Deborah Treep and Natascha van den Ban, assisted by the Stadskwekerij Den Haag and Engelsman Hoveniers, the design was realized in one day.
