Art sculpture NDSM

Commissioned by Stichting NDSM, Publi air has once again created an art sculpture designed by South African artist Golden Dean (Dean Hutton). The first inflatable we made for Hutton was the Soft Vnxnxs. This was exhibited in the HEM and was a huge success.

Design

Dean Hutton asked us to work on his new design: Big Fat Trans Light MerQueer. A hybrid between a human and sea monster, that seems to have crawled out of the IJ water with tentacles. Body contours once again play a major role in the design. With the artwork, Hutton addresses the personal and political experience of ‘hyper visibility’: being visible (fat, queer, trans body) and at the same time invisible and unimportant (fat, queer, trans body). The artwork had to be bigger, crazier and more striking than the Soft Vnxnxs. We succeeded!

(Come to) Light Festival NDSM

Stichting NDSM manages and programs the approximately 10-hectare outdoor area of the NDSM wharf. From their role as director, they work together with the community on a broad cultural program to make the cultural uniqueness of the area visible. In the winter months of 2021, the foundation presented ‘(Come To) Light’, an exhibition consisting of four light artworks. Four international makers highlight important themes or people with their works. They thereby answer the question: who or what deserves to be in the spotlight more in public spaces? The works are free to visit and can be found spread across the NDSM wharf. Want to know more about NDSM or the exhibition? Visit this page.

Response NDSM (Petra Heck)

“The collaboration with Publi air was very professional and smooth. The coordination with the artist remotely also went very well, fortunately, because Dean could not come over since getting a visa is now very difficult with COVID. I am very happy with the end result, it works well on the location. Also, when there was vandalism, Publi air immediately took action and resolved the issue. And although vandalism does not necessarily make me feel positive about society, I am happy to fight for a more social world, as Dean says: “Radically soft in an uncompromising world… A tenderqueer invests trust in a public to respond kindly, to allow our bodies to be safe together, to give queer space, regardless of how we sometimes fall short of each other.”

Goldendean shares moments of soft courage to affirm the right of all bodies to exist, be celebrated and protected – to evoke those tender feelings by deliberately pretending to be crazy and playful, sometimes a clown, sometimes a warrior, always vulnerable.”
